Photos: Messenger returns to Mercury

Machaut, the largest crater in this photo, is about sixty miles wide and contains a smooth surface shows that indicates it has been covered by lava flows. The floor of one of the two large craters within Machaut appears to have been covered with lava but the other large crater was formed at a later time as it sinks below the lava surface.
