Start-up General Compression is betting that a radically different wind turbine design can enhance compressed air energy storage. It is trying to raise money to build a turbine that would have an air compressor in the nacelle, the housing behind the turbine's blades.
Once the air is compressed, it is pumped underground and then taken out to turn a device called an expander that makes electricity. Company executives say there are enough underground storage formations in the United States for several years of development.
