Larry Feinberg, who directs research at Mascoma's New Hampshire lab, shows test tubes where scientists grow cultures of different microorganisms. Behind him are more samples that they are testing.
Feinberg travels around the world to seek out these bugs. He said little is known about most organisms on Earth. One sample was harvested from a hot spring in Nevada, he said. The company is working with bacteria and yeasts.
