"This is not a carbon copy of OSX. It is a fairly solid release."

by bluarash on May 24, 2006

Pros: Slick interface, bitlocker, nice architecture, and rich programming libraries. This is clearly the future of operating systems.

Cons: Search needs some timing improvements, UAC needs, I still prefer UNIX, and too many versions.

Summary: I am tired of the Apple FUD being spread on this site. There is nothing wrong with having an opinion, but people need to keep objectivity in mind when doing a review. The Vista operating system is neither a 1 nor a 10. Further, it is not a carbon copy of OSX.

It has a number of very interesting features. A number of which are not even found in OSX. One would do themselves a service to download the Windows Vista Product Guide (as a comparison).

One thing that upsets me about this particular Public Beta is that I feel it's in response to Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. People will either tinker with SLED 10 or tinker with Beta Vista. I think this is an underhanded way for them to steal SLED's thunder. I really like SLED, and while I know it's a little player and cannot possibly replace Windows or OS X, I do think that it definetely deserves a much greater market share.

Ok, so admit to having been an Apple zeaolot after I realised that MS copies them a whole lot.

Now I feel quite differently. I think companies need to be less bashful about implementing good ideas. It is one thing to replicate functionalities and a very different thing to to literally copy code.

I guess XGL on Linux comes to mind, I love XGL. I think Microsoft should focus less on whether or not they release the perfect 3D personality in this OS and just make it modular. Windows has always had an edge because more people develop for it (it's a rather ugly feudal system in actuality). If more people develop Vista-Themes than just MS they will benefit greatly as will we.

Example: Zoom-fitting all of your open windows so that you can see them at once is a great idea. Apple paid to be the first to implement it and that was fine, now that there are opensource versions... well, let's get it going already.

As consumers we are our own worst enemies when we get all upset about copy-cating. Is it really just copy-cating or is it that every level of technological development allows for more fluff and more possibilities and more pizzaz? I think it's both.

I don't understand is why we are loyal to them when these companies exist to make a profit, and when they interact with each other (MS and Apple) to corner the market. Anybody care to explain why they both pretend that Linux doesn't exist? If Microsoft is so evil... why is there an iTunes for Windows, but not an iTunes for Linux?

It's all about the money folks. So lets stop being ridiculous about it and demand our money's worth!

Imagine if only one car manufacturer had airbags, wouldn't that be ridiculous?

We need to get over it. These companies need to really ratchet it up with the production of good ideas and the implementation of them. I expect much more from the hugest of software companies. We allow them to exist as monopolies and they owe us the decency to make these few products outstanding.

Unlike a lot of people, I think Windows XP is a great opperating system. It behaves a lot less like an application and it is quick and lean. I wonder how much market there would be for Vista if there were a way to layer on 3D acceleration onto Windows XP. It reminds me of WinAMP (back in the day) and its many available skins. I think somebody needs to come up with something like XGL for Windows for those interested.

I think Microsoft will see how much of a business there is to be made out of the fluff. I think it would be great bussiness for them to sell cosmetic upgrades to Vista in Ms Plus! for Vista or something.

It would be like buying a videogame (all fluff) but just to keep your work environment more enjoyable.

I want windows vista bad I tried to download it from Microsoft's servers but the servers were busy then I tried to order it with cash order (they only accept credit card) only a teenager and would have paid it with my own pocket money.

Is there anyway I could get vista without credit card? Perhaps I might keep waiting until a future CPP is available and perhaps more stable from what I heard about Beta 2.

Can somebody reply and have a link that I can go to or be directed somewhere, and I can't downloaded it anyway because I have low speed connection anyway and thus would take days for me to download it.

    Thanks

Lets not forget that Apple copied off of Windows Media Center Edition with their Front Row, or whatever it's called.

And there's nothing wrong with making a nice GUI, pretty much any way you try to make an operating system pretty looking, it's going to look like OSX because OSX is pretty looking.

I find that to be the funniest thing that I've ever read on this site bluarash. cnet is the most anti-apple site I know. Good humor there though.

Could you name me a few of those features that are NOT in OS X? I think I know of one.

This is an operating system, not a music app or a photo app or some other app. I would expect an enormous set of differences.

If you list the features that OS X (a five year old OS) has over XP you'll see what I expect to see in a new OS.

Vista is derivative and incremental, at best.
