    "Vista is a joke"

    by mrpiddly1 on January 14, 2007

    Pros: new look,

Cons: tries to be OSX which it fails at

Summary: Windows vista is like some Frankenstein creation between OSX and windows XP. As expected the results are not good. While the new look is much better that the blue windows of XP, it is still very ugly compared to OSX. The effects is nice, but for people with old or crap computers, dont expect much. Instillation was horrid and took me most of a day just to install it and put my files onto it. It crashed a few times in instillation too. Once it was installed, the trouble began. It had some problems with my external hard drive and internet connection so, it froze when I opened up that drive. I fixed that by spending a hour clicking in endless control windows until I found a little box to un-check.

As I said earlier, Vista is much like OSX, but dont get your hopes up, looks aren't all that matter. The window flip thing is nice, but very unpractical and I prefer tha layout of OSX's Expose. The widget like things in Vista are a huge rip of of OSX. I found them difficult and not worth the time. Plus, they are always on the screen so they are very annoying. You have to close all other windows to see them. There is also a very small selection of widgets(hopefully this will change) IT would also be nice to have an easy widget creator much like in leopard but Microsoft isn't know for easy. The preview function is nice but soemtimes comes up randomly. As for windows live search, ripoff of spot light, that did not work for me and told me that there was a system error when I searched.

Text to speach is a complete failure and possibly the worst feature of vista. The whole operating system is very none friendly to people with hearing or seeing problems (i do not have them, just my speculation) Also, the photo viewer is nice but is slow as hell even on my fast computer. It also doesn't like half my photos because they are in the wrong format. Other features have their highs and lows but I left vista very disappointed. They took 5 years to create a ripoff of OSX, and they didnt create a good ripoff, they created another OS that is impossible to use and that only a hacker can fix.

I run BOTH Tiger and Vista, and build software that runs on BOTH platforms. Each O/S has its pluses and minuses and each does some things better than the other, but it is absolutely absurd to claim that Vista is a "1" while OSX rocks -- that is crap.

When griping about 'rip-offs' you seem to forget that it was originally Apple who ripped-off the whole idea of a graphical user interface from Xerox, and then had the audacity to claim that it was theirs because they stole it, fair and square. Then they sued Microsoft for building an OS that used a graphical user interface, but the Court ruled that a company can't recover damages for having their stolen property stolen. Remember that??
For future reference, "Installation" has only one "I" (you misspelled it several times).
If 'Vista is a joke' and OSX is so great, then why does everyone run Windows? How is it that Microsoft just posted more than a 20% increase in quarterly earnings year over year (they attributed the large increase in both revenue and profitability to the FACT that Vista is being so well received). You must be much smarter than everyone else.

Well, I guess you probably have to go now. Steve Jobs needs his coffee topped-off.

Well, in comment to your opinion. You stated, "but for people with old or crap computers, dont expect much." well you must be one of them. Vista, yes, does have some bugs to be fixed but overall it is a good operating system for any user with a decent computer (one with a rating of 4.0 or over). For me installation only took 30min and to install drivers and software (like, Photoshop CS3, Dreamweaver CS3, Microsoft office 2007) only took another 30 or so min. not very long. So before you make an opinion, next time make sure you get at least a decent computer and state your parts (that's if you don't lie) so people have a better understanding of your issues.

i have friends like you who loves mac and never uses ms windows. however, they don't go around yelling ms sucks this, ms sucks that. do you know why?
cuz like you, they don't know much about ms windows, and comprehends it. you on the other hand, knows only about mac, and boast how little you know about ms windows. all you can say is: mac this, mac that. vista sucks this, vista sucks that.
when you review something, try to stay unbiased, ok?

  • reply by: smart technician on May 12, 2007

Not only does microsoft suck so does the majority of there support, I had to repair several Vista systems that are proan to spyware had to call there stupid support lines because of there 3 key install

  • reply by: socalsal on May 2, 2007

First they came out with windows me which sucked and i never got over. Then windows xp which is okay now vista?? They ripped off mac os's. And the price is rape

  • reply by: tanaka_x25 on April 2, 2007

you dont have vista, dont review it.

It sounds to me that you're an OSX fan. Yes, some features may have been "ripped off" from OSX, but that doesn't make it a bad operating system. Any new program/operating system is bound to have bugs. Show me one instance of a program/game/operating system being released without a problem and then I'll delete this. Yep, there are problems now, but a few months down the road they will be fixed with a service pack.

Running your opinion through a word processor helps quite a bit too when trying to convince other people that you know what you're talking about.

One final thought. If you're computer is so "fast" please post the spec's of it. Windows Vista is a huge resource hog, yes, so you have to be prepared. You can't run Vista with 512 ram and a Radeon 9800.

Look, no one, or at least I do not care that some of the new features Microsoft has released look like the Mac... In fact I could care less.

Windows has always proved it self to be just as good or even better then Mac at somethings...

Just because you love your Mac, you don't have to go around writing anti-windows reviews.

If you want to write a review type about the features in Windows, this is not a table of carping, and that is all that you are doing.. Complaining, complaining and complaining..

    Good day to you sir.

  • reply by: cargenius42 on February 11, 2007

First of all, use a dictionary or something dude. Grammar and spelling errors all over that mess. Second of all, its a little bit of a downer, but I believe one can not truely experience Windows Vista unless on a brand new computer. Updating to Vista on an older PC is a hastle if not impossible. (As demonstrated in those "I'm a mac and I'm a PC" commercials. LOL)

Moron..Thats all..Maybe you should go back to pen, paper and snail mail..My grandma could install vista and move files without a hitch..Ive done it on 5 machines, no problems yet.

  • reply by: cross platform on February 5, 2007

Well let me say the start that I used to be an OSX user. I do miss that OS very much as it was a lot less problem than XP has been for me. The reason I switched is I'm a gamer. I was all ready to switch to Vista until I found out the drivers issue. If you have a 3 year old top of the line PC like mine ( which I just upgraded the ram and video card in preperation for this ) you might have problems with some of your games in Vista. A lot of recent games ( Fear Battlefield 2142 ) use a sound scheme called EAX. Vista doesn't support this. As a matter of fact my Creative Labs Audigy soundblaster card may not work correctly with Vista. The drivers are still in beta. So it's much safer to wait until say SP 1 until upgrading. Many game sites are recomending this. So when I hear MS fans talk about how OS X suffers from lack of games when talking about Vista I just have to chuckle. I'd love to upgrade but it's not worth the trouble I might go through right now. And I might add OS X was never like this. It just worked.

This post is EXTREMELY biased, and obviously from a bitter MAC user. I installed Windows Vista Ultimate with absolutely no problem at all, and in less than 2 hours. I can't stand the bitter MAC users who without any knowledge will make negative comments about anything with the word microsoft in it. Don't even start about the Windows copying MAC thing.... MAC is completely stolen from Xerox.

  • reply by: da.bell on February 5, 2007

    1) If you were thinking that this would be the miracle OS, then you are crazy to think that. (2) You also gave it a 1 out of 10 but said that there were areas that were good about the OS... Don't quite understand where you could come up with a 1 if you had some good points to say about it.

  • reply by: close5828 on February 4, 2007

It's amazing... Mac Ppl complain about "PC Fanboys" making fun of their systems on Mac Discussion Boards, but then again they do the same thing on news sites.

Perhaps there's a reason why people buy PCs more than Macs--cost, cost, cost.

The "Let them Eat Cake" mentality of Apple doesn't appeal to those who make less than 30k a year.

I'll never forget in one of my major courses, this girl's MacBook kept shutting off right in the middle of the lecture. I had to give her a copy of the notes...she finally got a PC at WalMart for $400 and has been using it ever since.

I'd rather have a $400 computer that works reliably, than a $1300 piece of garbage that can't stay on for longer than 20min but looks pretty. I think 90%+ of the consumer market would agree.

  • reply by: gmman on February 1, 2007

Your reply is SPAM. Please only write reviews for products you've actually tried out.
And Vista is NOT a copy of OS X, I have used OS X before and they are nothing alike.
We need honest reviews, not a mac user's opinion.

i have been usin vista since beta 2. I am currently runnin the Business edition compliments of the Power together promotion.

plus i have used osx. and Vista is not a copied version of osx or a ripoff of it.

i hate when mac fanboys like yourself try and write an opinion for an OS the have only read about. why dont you try and run vista for the next 6 months and give an opinion then ok!!!!!!!

  • reply by: Repère on January 28, 2007

Ridiculous review, from an obviously frustrated Apple fanboy. If your point was to try to make OX 10 looks good vs the all bad Vista, you failed. Kind of tired with these fanboys, worshiping a trademark like an idol, pretending that 90% of the computer users are a bunch of idiots for not realizing how great Mac OS are. It's good to have the choice, and the majority of the users made a clear one in that instance. Mac OS is, well, not that good maybe...

  • reply by: MacGregory on January 28, 2007

I know my name discloses my appreciation for Macs, but i am also a user of both and I don't let rhetoric get in the way of my opinions.

All of the MS apologists who for whatever reason can not detach their lives from Windows long enough to see the rest of the world, need to face their own facts:
    1. Vista IS mostly window dressing taken from the Mac OS of 3 years ago. Spotlight, Expose, Widgets are all relatively mature tech in Macland. That is a fact.
    2. MS is continously "needing" to appropriate all standards into its own ecosystem, like a 19th century colonial power, form pdf's, to java, to now html and jpegs!! Wake up sheep, MS wants to optimize everything for itself and as long as you feel warm and safe you go along with it. Unfortunately that is the road to stagnant innovation - except for gaming titles and Excel plug-in apps!
    3. Windows is just too bloated and unsophisticated in many core technologies that faster processors are simply hiding from the highend user, but everyone else suffers.

  • reply by: BigMomma09 on January 28, 2007

APPLE FANBOY?? Because I can see it; all he did was compare Vista to OS X, never stopping to compare FACTS of both OS's. He makes OS X seem like the god of OS's and it really isn't. What a shame, fanboys like him annoy me. Also PLEASE take some grammar classes!

  • reply by: theradialangel on January 27, 2007

Stop comparing Vista to OS X for a minute, because all I see in this post is a glorification of OS X, which is not god of the operating system world. Vista does many things way better than OS X could pray to do, especially media. XP wasn't strong in media, Vista fixes that. Games for Windows, Media Center, and built in apps are solid and have plenty of room for growth in the future to show up Apple's hope-to-be-prodigy software. I hate people who ignore facts and decide they have a strong argument.

Vista Ultimate is for sale for $370 at Costco for the full version. If you have XP, just purchase the upgrade for crying out loud. You save $100. OS X does have a fair price, but OS X does not have the capabilities of tying into an Xbox 360, IPTV, Media Center, and a vast number of other tools like photo editing (if you get Ultimate). Stop bashing and realise that Apple is not king.

  • reply by: carnevales on January 27, 2007

What version of Vista did you try to install? If it was any version before RC1, I'm not surprised you had problems. But, the RC1 and RC2 are pretty solid. I'm running RC2 on a mid-range system (AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 2GB RAM, nVidia 7600GT GPU) and RC2 runs everything smoother, faster and better than XP. During installation, Vista automatically downloaded and updated all device drivers. The only piece of hardware it missed was my scanner, which it promptly found a solution for shortly after installation. Vista look great and works great, and whatever small bugs were left over from RC1 and RC2 will be fixed by release. Another great OS from MS!

  • reply by: pvolk on January 26, 2007

Many of the reasons you gave for Vista copying OSX, are features that were found in early alphas of Vista. So yes mabe OSX debued them in final versions first...but MS was still the brains behind them.

Please do some research next time before flaming.

$400 is WAY too much money to spend on a re-packaged version of WindowsXP that will UNDOUBTEDLY be full of nasty bugs for years......

Bill Gates can stuff Vista where the sun don't shine......

Doesn't Bill ALREADY have enough money ?

  • reply by: Fil0403 on January 25, 2007

The prove you didn't even try Vista is when you say you took a whole day installing it and it even crashed (I took less than an hour and less than 5 clicks on the left button of my mouse and it never crashed).
Either that or you're just plain stupid (which I wouldn't be surprised at all, given the ridiculous "facts" of your amusing "review").
And regarding Vista failing in supposedly trying to be OSX, the only thing I can say is: "thank God". I wouldn't want an OS where I can't play games and half of my software doesn't work.

P.S.: Unlike this sad Apple fanboy, I am using Vista, for a week now (more exactly Microsoft Windows Vista Business which I downloaded for free through MSDNAA).

  • reply by: akira2 on January 24, 2007

Like others say, you have bad spelling and grammar. Also, I also dislike people who rate things that has been designed, engineered, re-designed, and re-engineered over and over again. These products, such as the Windows Vista AND the OSX, deserve much more than an "1." Personally, I believe anyone who take all the cons in and leave the pros out are the true "Jokes."

  • reply by: frenchybg33 on January 24, 2007

How can you say that Vista is a "Frankenstein" creation of XP and OSX. That is the worst analogy because XP and OSX are the #1 competitors to each other. How can you say that Vista spawned from both of them. It makes no sense. Also, how can you say that the results are expected to be bad. Are you biased or just ignorant?
BTW, you should learn that it is installation and not instillation. Instillation means to introduce by gradual, persistent efforts. So if you're going to write a review, make sure that you choose the right words.
If you like OSX, write something pertinent about it rather than degrading a product just because of your ignorance and unwillingness to learn.

  • reply by: clindhartsen on January 24, 2007

In all respects, anyone complaining about how Windows Vista is a bad rip off of OS X needs to just stop their bickering and allow people out there to make up their own mind. My own experience, with a PC with moderate standards (P4 2.4GHZ, non-HT; GeForce FX 5500), my own performance is pretty good in RC2, which I am using to type in this opinion. Really, the early Betas were rather mediocre at times with preformance, but many improvements have happened.

Also, this operating system has taken MS roughly 6 years, with the entire system being restarted midway on top of the Win Serv. 03 base. If you want to compare the time it took them to make the OSes, how many years did it take Apple to have all the same featues in their OS? V. 4, was that the one? That technically took them .... 6 years to finish also! Really, if you want to think about it, MS is building everything in now, instead of adding them through new versions costing everyone an extra 100 dollars each!

  • reply by: vic delta on January 24, 2007

I wouldn't buy Vista at this time either, but I stopped reading your review after the second misspelling of 'installation' and calling something a joke has no reader value. If you can't put together a decent readable review, you probably can't install an operating system without problems.

  • reply by: rodspina on January 24, 2007

Probably one of the worst things around the internet are those people that always find reasons to flame everything all the time.
Instead of criticizing so much, they should focus their energy in creating something, not trying to destroy what others have done.

  • reply by: paulgreyhead on January 24, 2007

Are you using a retail version of Vista or a beta?
I installed Vista Ultimate in just over 30 minutes, with no crashes. I never had a crash when I was beta testing either.
From your opinion it sounds like you wanted Vista to be poor, so that's how you found it to be.
Non-Mac users are not concerned whether it looks or works like OSX. You obviously prefer that so why bother trying Vista at all? Even if Vista had bells and whistles you would have found fault with it!
Your biased opinion and lack of computer knowledge will not help anyone that may read your review.

  • reply by: Surferdarrell on January 23, 2007

First of all OSX sucks...why does it suck because its made by MAC. And lets face it folks the only successful product that MAC ever made was the IPod. Really...be honest with yourself.

Also the picture viewer works just fine on my PC, the VOR system is flawed but it's the first edition, so of course it will have it's problems.

  • reply by: Livius Drusus on January 22, 2007

Well, considering that Vista won't be released until the 30th, you have at the very most, the RTM which still isn't completely final.

More likely, you have the RC2 which was a test so crashes on that aren't a sign of what's to come.

Also it is impossible to know what Vista actually "stole" from OSX since some of the features in OSX came out after work on Vista was long underway.

Apple comes out with a new OS every 2 years or so, Microsoft, every 5.
Apple seems like it innovates more than Microsoft because it puts out those ideas more often.
